Career Café: Setting a Schedule

Image
Career Café is an opportunity for students to learn about careers from individuals in their community.  One of my biggest success as a school counselor  has been s tarting a Career Café at my school. Students absolutely love Career Café, it is a blast to host, and it meets  ASCA Student Standard in the Career Domain .   Career Cafe can also be geared toward any level - elementary, middle, or high school! I have gotten tons of inquiries and questions about hosting a Career Café. I am creating a series of posts to explain Career Café in greater detail and provide you with the tools you need to start a Career Café at your school.  Now that you have determined a  location for your Career Café , it is time to think about when and how often you would like to host it.  Setting a Schedule One of the great things about Career  Café  is  you  can determine how often and wh...

#ASCA12 Web 2.0 and Technology Smackdown: Get Your Geek On!

Image
I had the pleasure of presenting  Web 2.0 Technology Smackdown  with a panel of tech savvy school counselors Julia V. Taylor ,  Dr. Erin Mason ,  Andrea Burston , and  Dr. Russ Sabella  on June 25th at the American School Counselor Association Conference!  I can't even begin to tell you how much fun it was to get my geek on with such an amazing group of people for a standing room only audience!  Dr. Erin Mason ,  Julia V. Taylor ,  Dr. Russ Sabella ,  Andrea Burston , and Danielle Schultz (Me!) For our presentation we each shared some of our favorite technology tools we use as professional school counselors. We each had three minutes to share about the a tool and then we rotated to the next person.  We even involved the audience! Volunteers from the audience were able to come up and share their favorite tools with everyone! It was a blast!  Our presentation was fast and furious, but I was able to share ...

#ASCA12 and #SCCHAT Recap

Image
I just got back from the American School Counselor Association Conference on Tuesday evening. I had an amazing time connecting and sharing with other school counselors from all over the world!  It was so much fun and I was absolutely exhausted when I got back.  There is so much I want to tell you about my time at ASCA so I will be sharing everything in multiple posts! One of my most favorite things about the 2012 ASCA conference was hosting two School Counselor Tweet Ups with  Dr. Erin Mason , a Counselor Educator at DePaul in Chicago, IL, and creator of  School Counselors' Online Professional Exchange (SCOPE) .  Dr. Mason and I hosted the School Counselor Tweet Ups as a way for school counselors and educators who follow and participate in School Counselor Tweet Chats ( #scchat ) to meet up live!  Both Tweet Ups were well attended and a huge success!  It was so surreal to meet school counselors I interact with all the time on Tw...

School Counselor Spotlight: Kindness Garden

Image
I love bright and colorful things that make an impact, so needless to say I instantly fell in love with Emily's School Counselor Spotlight submission as soon as I saw the pictures! Emily shares a fun and easy way to make a Kindness Garden for No-Name Calling Week or Random Acts of Kindness Week. Emily wrote: During Random Acts of Kindness/No Name Calling week, I did a different lesson on kindness in each grade level. To tie it all together, each student was given an opportunity to decorate a flower for our "kindness garden," which was displayed directly outside of the cafeteria entrance. Each flower needed to contain either an example of a kindness that they have seen or done, or a wish/dream/idea for spreading kindness throughout the school. When stapling the flowers to the bulletin board, I scattered the different grade levels so that students would need to explore the garden and read different flowers in order to find their own. Students loved this activ...
