My New Office Space!

I am so excited to share pictures of my new office space with you!

This is what it looked like when we came in.
The two desks were connected and up against the back wall.

Here is my desk! Our bosses gave use each a bag of stuff to welcome us! :) :) :)

Look at all this cool stuff! I feel so school-spirit-y! Is that a word?! ;)

I share my office with my fellow graduate assistant.  We are in the process of making our office student friendly. We are actually hosting an "open house" this coming week to encourage students to come and see us!  I can't wait to share more about our "open house" and share pictures with you of the updates we have made so far.

I hope the ideas I share will help you get some ideas for open houses you plan and ideas for your own office!

I've been MIA, but I'm OK! :)

Not sure why I felt the need to make that title rhyme...

I just wanted to let everyone know that I did not in fact fall of the face of the Earth! I just want to let everyone know that I am OK and nothing is wrong! :) I have gotten lots of emails and messages about my whereabouts. You are all so supportive and I appreciate your concern.

I will still be hosting giveaways of the remaning four items. I don't have a specific date set for the giveaways at this time, but I will announce the giveaways through School Counselor Blog, the School Counselor Blog Facebook PageTwitterPinterest, and Google+.

I actually have one giveaway going on right now. Head over to the School Counselor Blog Facebook Page to enter to win a FREE BANNER OF YOUR CHOICE from the School Counselor Blog Store. :) You have until Sunday, September 16th at 12:01am EST to enter!

What I've Been Up To...

Starting my Ph.D. program has been a much bigger adjustment for me than I anticipated. It was especially hard to get back in the swing of things after having off all summer!  I am still trying to get used to things and get my bearings. There have been many times already that I have thought and even pondered aloud "WHAT DID I GET MYSELF INTO?!" I have to keep reminding myself that I am on a journey towards a destination that I have wanted for as long as I can remember.

That being said I am absolutely LOVING my graduate assisantship where I work for the student services program for the Department of Athletics.  Of all of the jobs I have had in my life I have never felt so welcomed, appreciated, and respected. Ever. It has been pretty great to say the very least.

I am very excited to host programs to support the academic success of student athletes. I love creating and planning programs (as you may know) so I am dying to get started!

I really want to make the programs I facilitate student-focused. I first met with an officer in the student-athlete organization to get feedback on the ideas I am hoping to implement. The student athlete officer was very interested in the ideas I had and also offered great additional suggestions. After talking to the student officer, I created a survey using Google forms to administer to students. I am using the survey to see which programs students are interested in and when they would be available to attend programs. I will be attending a meeting this weekend to share some of my ideas with the student athlete organization as a whole and get suggestions and feedback from the group.

Just from the talking to the student-athlete officer and receiving initial results from the survey, there is a lot of interest in the different types of programs I plan to offer.

Below is the question I asked students about programs they would like to see offered.

I created a Facebook page, twitter account, and blog to share information with student athletes. I think this will be a great way to connect with them and will make information easily accessible.  I will be sharing tips and information related to academic success as well as the other areas that I plan to facilitate programs about.

Below are some screenshots of the pages...

Here is the facebook page

Twitter Page

and the blog! :)

I am very excited to start programs and share more information with you all about the specifics of the programs.

I just want to reiterate to you all how important you are to me! I LOVE writing School Counselor Blog and connecting with YOU! :)

So... how has your school year been so far? What have you been up to? Please share your questions, comments, and feedback in the comment section below! I would love to hear from you!

"Wings" {Giveaway}: 2012 School Counselor Blog Back to School Giveaway

I am so excited to host the School Counselor Blog Back to School Giveaway, which is 10 days of daily giveaways starting September 1st and ending on September 10th!

Today is day six of the School Counselor Blog Back to School Giveaway.

Today's giveaway for the School Counselor Blog Back to School Giveaway is Wings by Christopher Myers.

Wings by Christopher Myers is a book I have been meaning to write about for a loooooong time. I first read Wings about three years ago and was immediately drawn in by the illustrations.  I could not wait to share Wings with my students!

Wings tells the story of Ikarus Jackson, a new boy at school. He is ridiculed by the other kids (and adults!) because of his wings and his ability to fly. One student, however stands up for him and helps him see the beauty and ability his wings give him.

Wings is a beautiful story and the artwork is just amazing!

Wings is a great book for conversations about bullying, being a positive bystander, and celebrating the things that make you unique.

As I said before I have been wanting to write about Wings  for a loooooong time! I am so excited to share this book and I wanted to share with you an activity I created to go with Wings...

Out of the blue one day I discovered that if I traced both hands side by side...

and then flipped my paper upside down...

...it looked like WINGS!!!!!!

I really cannot express how excited I was when I thought of this... I am not sure why it took me so long to write about it!

I had students create their own wings by tracing their hands. I allowed students to decorate the wings with things that made them unique using magazine clippings, drawings, or words.

I am so excited to give away Wings in the School Counselor Blog Back to School Giveaway!

How would you use Wings in your work with students?

For this giveaway I am using Rafflecopter. The giveaway opens September 6, 2012 and will close at 11:59pm EST September 6, 2012.

***IMPORTANT: In order for your entry to count you MUST leave a comment in the comment section below about how you would use Wings in your work as a school counselor!***

Rory's Story Cubes {Giveaway}: 2012 School Counselor Blog Back to School Giveawy

I am so excited to host the School Counselor Blog Back to School Giveaway, which is 10 days of daily giveaways starting September 1st and ending on September 10th!

Today is day five of the School Counselor Blog Back to School Giveaway.

Today's giveaway for the School Counselor Blog Back to School Giveaway is Rory's Story Cubes.

I first discovered Rory's Story Cubes when I was at the grocery store one day... I know... random right?! They were deeply discounted and I never heard of them before.  I took one look at them and thought "I bet these would be cool for individual and group counseling sessions."

What can I say... I always have school counseling on the brain!

Rory's Story Cubes are a set of dice with pictures on all of the sides. To play Rory's Story Cubes you roll the dice and create a story using the images as inspiration. Rory's Story Cubes is for one or more players. Rory's Story Cubes can be used in soooo many ways... the possibilities are endless.

Rory's Story Cubes are great for individual sessions with students. Story-telling can be a safe way for students to express how they are feeling through symbolism and talking through characters.

Rory's Story Cubes are also soooo much fun for group sessions as an icebreaker activity.  Students love to to create a story as a group. I have each student roll a die and add to the story as we go around the circle or in any order students choose.  You can switch Rory's Story Cubes up in so many ways by giving students a theme, giving them a problem you want them to address with the story, and more.  There is usually lots of laughter when you play as a group! :)

Rory's Story Cubes are recommended for ages 8 and up.

How you would use Rory's Story Cubes in your work with students? I can't wait to see your ideas!

For this giveaway I am using Rafflecopter. The giveaway opens September 5, 2012 and will close at 11:59pm EST September 5, 2012.

***IMPORTANT: In order for your entry to count you MUST leave a comment in the comment section below about how you would use Rory's Story Cubes in your work as a school counselor!***

I love using Tess' Tree for my grief and loss groups. Tess' Tree is a great book to use to talk about the stages of grief that people go through related to a loss.

The HarperCollins' Publisher Page for Tess's Tree has some great extras. "When I Grow Up" {Giveaway}: 2012 Back to School Giveaway!

I am so excited to host the School Counselor Blog Back to School Giveaway, which is 10 days of daily giveaways starting September 1st and ending on September 10th!

Today is day three of the School Counselor Blog Back to School Giveaway.

Today's giveaway for the School Counselor Blog Back to School Contest is When I Grow Up by Al Yankovic.

In honor of Labor Day I wanted to give away a career related book. I decided to give away the same book I gave away last Labor Day, When I Grow Up by Al Yankovic. Yes, "Weird Al" wrote a children's book about career and it rocks! I couldn't resist giving this book away again... it really is that good!

I fell in love with When I Grow Up last summer by Kelly one of my Pennsylvania School Counseling Association (PSCA) colleagues introduced it to me. I have since used it in career lessons with 5th grade students.

When I Grow Up is a fun and engaging way to teach career development standards to students.  When I Grow Up is about 8 year old Billy who has many things he wants to be when he grows up.  There are some real and some zany jobs that Billy wants to be. The illustrations are great and give incredible detail to Billy's wild imagination.

The message that rings true throughout When I Grow Up is that career is a life-long journey and individuals may change careers. Billy's teacher tries to get Billy to pick one thing he wants to be. My favorite part of the book is at the end when Billy tells his teacher all the careers his grandfather has been and states that his grandfather is still not sure what he wants to be.

Below is book trailer video of Al Yankovic reading excerpts of When I Grow Up

When I Grow Up opens the door to so many conversations and lessons about career. When I Grow Up could be used for a lesson about how interests influence career choice and success, the changing workplace, lifelong learning, and much more.  I used When I Grow Up for a career lesson with 5th grade students.

When I Grow Up would be great for students K-5.

For this giveaway I am using Rafflecopter. The giveaway opens September 3, 2012 and will close at 11:59pm EST September 4, 2012.

"Confessions of a Former Bully" {Giveaway}: 2012 Back to School Giveaway!

I am so excited to host the School Counselor Blog Back to School Giveaway, which is 10 days of daily giveaways starting September 1st and ending on September 10th!

Today is day two of the School Counselor Blog Back to School Giveaway.

Today's giveaway for the School Counselor Blog Back to School Giveaway is Confessions of a Former Bully by Trudy Ludwig

I fell in love with Confessions of a Former Bully by Trudy Ludwig the first time I read it! I loved this book so much that I even made a bully hat to use with the book.  I wrote a post about making a bully hat using a hat I found in the dollar spot at Target.

Confessions of a Former Bully is written in the perspective of Katie, a student who bullied other students. With the help of her school counselor she chooses to write this journal-style book as a way to help other kids understand bullying. #1 I love any book that mentions school counselors in a positive way, but this book goes way above and beyond just mentioning a school counselor but shares how Katie is helped by the school counselor too! LOVE! Side note: Confessions of a Former Bully is actually a sequel to another great Trudy Ludwig book My Secret Bully.

Confessions of a Former Bully is a fun, kid-friendly read that can be broken down into parts for lessons and bulletin boards! I have used Confessions of a Former Bully with fifth through seventh grade for lessons on different types of bullying, bystanders, what to do if someone is bullied, etc.  I did a lesson on being a Hero Bystander using part of the book. I also thought it would be cool to make a bulletin board using the Katie's "Empowerment Tools" she outlines in the book.

Confessions of a Former Bully is also a great conversation piece to have on display in your office when you aren't actively using it. Students love this book and are pulled in right away by the title.

Confessions of a Former Bully is a great resource for school counselors serving students third grade and up!

For this giveaway I am using Rafflecopter. The giveaway opens September 2, 2012 and will close at 11:59pm EST September 3, 2012.
