{giveaway} *Winner Announced* Black Friday Giveaway: "Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer" DVD

Last year I showed Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer to sixth grade classes for a lesson about Rudolph and Bullying.

Last week I taught a lesson about being a "hero bystander" in a 7th grade class using Confessions of a Former Bully. During the lesson I asked if anyone could give me a definition of a bystander.  A student raised their hand and said, "a bystander is someone who watches bullying happen and adds to it, like the other reindeer when you showed us Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer."

I was so excited that a student referenced the Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer and Bullying lesson I did last year!

The Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer and Bullying lesson could be used for many different grade levels.

I would use the Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer DVD to not only teach about bullying and the individuals involved in a bullying situation, but also to teach about tolerance, and how someone at school might be a little different than your other friends, but his or her difference could bring out a talent that might be really special and unique. I also would talk about as part of the lesson that it is important to stay true to yourself and "let your light shine" just like Rudolph! I would stress in the lesson that it is important to embrace who you are...if you feel most like your authentic self when you are wearing a turquoise hair piece as Lady Gaga did during her Thanksgiving special tonight so be it...I would then tie this back to the 3 roles people take on in a bullying situation by saying when people stay true to themselves, it is important for bystanders to stick by them if they do become a target of bullying.   2. I can't wait to use this movie with students. I think it's something that will stick with them for a long time and I love that each year, when they see or hear about Rudolph at Christmastime, they'll think about bullying and how to stop it.

  3. I just taught out 4th graders about being bullied, being bullied, and being a bystander, and would use this next month as a follow-up, as they want to act out and see what each of the roles look like "in action"- shifting from procedural knowledge to applied knowledge.

  5. How exciting! This is one of my FAVORITE all time movies. I'm a school library media specialist so I would definitely relate it to some type of literary element...characterization, plot, theme...all things students tend to struggle with. What a fun idea - love the bullying lesson!! Kiddos are never too old for Rudolph! :)

  7. I have just started a bullying unit with my 5th graders and this would be a perfect lesson to address the role of the bystander. The kids will love to watch a movie they have seen before and then learn to think about it in a new light. I would have them act out different scenes in the movie and let them decide how they could change the bullying scenario as bystanders. Thanks so much Danielle!

  9. I remember you suggesting this lesson in an earlier post, so I checked the book out of the library during our workday on Wednesday. I think this lesson would be appropriate for all grade levels, and showing the video would definitely enhance the lesson. My "relevant comment" on how I would use this lesson would be to expand on an earlier lesson I did with 4th graders. They wrote a "anti-bully" rap (in small groups of 3-4 students)...which could include reasons they shouldn't bully others or a way that they can stop bullying in their school. The kids want to perform their raps for our principal, and they have asked me if we can do this lesson again. So, during the "Rudolph" lesson I would have them create another rap but they must use a Christmas tune! Thanks for offering another great contest and allowing us to share ideas with others!

  10. It would be a great way to incorporate a holiday theme into my anti-bullying education with 5/6 students. I wonder how many people will run into opposition because of the Santa references. It's not an issue in my school but might be in others. Thanks for the awesome give aways!
