#ASCA22: Tips for Attending the ASCA National Conference in Person


Heading to Austin, TX for the 2022 American School Counselor Association Conference? 

Below Andrea Burston and I share tips to help you make the most of your ASCA Conference experience!


✨  PLAN AHEAD ✨

Do some research ahead of your arrival so that you are prepared for your trip.  

Check out the following:

- Health & safety guidelines

- Weather forecast

- Hotel location

- Conference location

 ✨  PACK FOR WORK AND PLAY ✨

When you're packing your bags, think about what you will wear to conference sessions and what you will wear during downtime.

If you are attending special events or activities, be sure to pack for them.

✨  CONNECT WITH OTHER SCHOOL COUNSELORS ✨

One of the most amazing aspects of the ASCA Conference is the opportunity to connect with other school counselors!

Some ways to connect:

- State or local meet-ups

- Planned social activities

- Social media meet-ups

- Between sessions

 ✨  MAKE TIME FOR FUN ✨

ASCA Conferences are great for professional development, and they are an excellent excuse to explore a new city.

Ask locals for recommendations (or do online research) for things to see and do in the area.

✨  TRY LOCAL RESTAURANT✨

Although it might be tempting to seek out familiar chain restaurants and coffee shops, it can add to your experience to try new things.

Ask locals (or do online research) for restaurant and coffee shop recommendations.


 ✨  DOWNLOAD THE CONFERENCE APP ✨

Download the ASCA Conference App before the conference begins to have easy access to the information you need.

The ASCA Conference App contains the schedule, session information, speaker information, updates and more.

Research sessions you want to attend before you get to the conference so you can plan out your day.


 ✨  FOLLOW #ASCA22 ✨

Follow the hashtag #ASCA22 on social media to view the ASCA Conference backchannel.

The #ASCA22 hashtag provides access to all posts related to the conference including resources from sessions and other relevant information.

Take What You Need, Give What You Can Sticky Note Board

Last year, I saw a lot of "Take What You Need, Give What You Can" Bulletin Boards popping up everywhere. I decided to fuel my new found love of printing on sticky notes and make a sticky note version. The idea behind the "Take What You Need, Give What You Can" board is that you take a positive message that you "need" to hear or "give" (write) a positive or uplifting message for someone else to take. I displayed the "Take What You Need, Give What You Can" sticky note board on a window near the school counseling office. Spring Mindfulness Bulletin Board with QR Codes

I created this colorful, interactive, spring bulletin board for our March & April PBIS theme, mindfulness. I made this bulletin board interactive for students by adding QR Codes with different mindfulness activities. Since most things need to be touch-less right now, I thought using QR Codes would be an easy way for students to access some mindfulness activities. If you are not familiar with QR Codes, QR stands for Quick Response. QR Codes are scannable with a smart device camera (iPad, tablet, or smart phone). you can easily make your own QR codes by using a QR Code generator. You can link the QR Code to a website or online document. When the user scans the QR Code they will be directed to the link. I used  QR Code Generator  to create the QR Codes.  I got the idea for this bulletin board while looking for mindfulness resources. Fabulous Find Friday: Pool Noodle (Funnoodle®)

This week's Fabulous Find is a Pool Noodle or Funnoodle®. For this week's Fabulous Find, I created a video of how to Create a Stress Reliever Using a Pool Noodle or Funnoodle® . Students will love these fun stress relievers and they are super cheap to make! I was able to make 58 - 1 inch stress relievers using the Funnoodle® for $2.
